How's about we don't play by ShinyMarine How's about we don't play by ShinyMarine
"- Come on, Inara, how's about we don't play. You didn't just trip, did you?
- No
- Well isn't that something... I knew you let her kiss you!"

So, here's another scene from Firefly : at the end of the episode Our Mrs Reynolds (I don't count the amount of times I saw it anymore :D). Mal's goofy grin and Inara's look of disbelief during the discussion that follows are hilarious, so I might try to draw them one day ;-)

It's the first time I drew profiles and the first time I drew with white pencil on black paper and I think this scene lends itself well to this style.
I kept it minimalist but let me know if you'd prefer a background.

The light in the one is superb. Inara's expression is great - she looks like a deer caught in the head light.

Sweetie, I love her character (well, I  all the characters, lol) so much in this amazing show, so that's the best compliment I've heard in awhile, thanks! I own the season, so you know I'm going back to watch this episode VERY soon because you made me nostalgic :P

Oh no, I definitely love it without a background! I was going to comment and say that it looked really dark compared to your Mal close-up of a few days ago (but not in a bad way!) but then I read your description and was like "ohhhhh, that makes sense". So yeah. And yes, this scene definitely matches this style :D

But my favourite thing about this pic (other than the fact that it's just amazing) is the way you've captured what for me was the main difference between Inara and Mal, the main reason they were drawn to each other, and equally the main reason they could never work it out together - he's all made out of hard lines and angles, and his shading is in triangles and lines; but Inara, she's smooth and curved, no blemishes. Mal's face has extremes of both light and dark, just like his personality - he's a good man, with a thoroughly good heart, whatever he might say, but the things he's done and the things he's seen have left marks so deep inside him. Inara on the other hand is much more consistent midtones, limned in white - she's a good person too, just as good as Mal, but she's gentle and calm and not so bruised and hurt by life, soft and the complete antithesis to Mal. These two are like the ultimate opposites-attract couple, but they also show how being so entirely different can equally pull you apart.

... Whoa. Totally didn't mean to, like, wax poetical there. But I meant it :D LOVE THIS PIC AND IT IS FAVED!

Wow, thank you very much for your clever insight :D it would make the perfect description for my drawing. I'm not a native English speaker so I wouldn't have been able to put my words together so well!
Actually, I didn't really think about it when I chose this scene (I basically chose it because the background was dark and the light perfect for practicing white-on-black drawing) , but I realized the difference you're talking about when I drew the two of them : Mal's rugged and contrasted face versus Inara's smooth features.
Anyway, I'm not going to paraphrase what you explained so clearly ;)
Your comment was much appreciated and thank you for faving

Hehe, that's my FAVOURITE episode. Jayne's line is best though, "This is my very favourite gun." or "That's why I don't kiss 'em on the mouth." Haha, or Shepherd, "Well, wasn't that special." Oh, there's so many good quotes in that one.

Good work. :D

I agree, so many good lines and funny scenes in this episode, it's hard to pick just one! The scene that cracks me up every time is when Saffron asked "If you're done with supper, would you like me to wash your feet?", Mal's blank face is priceless :D

Yes, who didn't squeal when watching this the first time?! I'm not disappointed with Mal's response though, it's such a funny twist and the perfect ending for the funniest episode :D

I tried different things with photoshop for the background, like adding a light source but I couldn't decide which version I preferred so thank you for your opinion, I'm glad you like the minimalist version!

Thank you! I've always found drawing on black paper more dramatic so I bought a block yesterday to try something new. It's really fun, a little bewildering at first because you have to think in negative but rewarding : I spent maybe 3 hours on it, on and off (actually more off than on with my attention span ;)) and it turned out well :)
You should definitely try it :D
